Mmuso Matlala
Founder & Managing Director
Matlala & Associates Inc is led by a distinguished attorney whose career reflects both exceptional technical ability and dynamic leadership. He previously served as the youngest director in the corporate and commercial division of MSMM Inc, recognised as the oldest black-owned law firm in South Africa and an institution that has produced over ten black judges across the superior courts, including the Constitutional Court. This foundation has shaped a practitioner who combines deep legal rigour with a progressive and commercially attuned mindset.
Beyond practice, he has served as a board member of a Section 12] Venture Capital Company, underscoring his fluency in complex investment structures and his appreciation of the broader commercial landscape. As an entrepreneur in his own right, he brings a rare dual perspective to legal advisory, one that is grounded not only in law, but in the practical realities of building, scaling, and sustaining businesses across diverse sectors.
His track record is both substantial and impactful. He has acted in matters of significant scale, including representing a public company with approximately 26 000 shareholders before the Supreme Court of Appeal, where he successfully overturned a liquidation order erroneously granted by the Pretoria High Court. He has further defended and successfully opposed a director delinquency application brought by the CIPC against five directors of a public company, safeguarding their legal standing as far as company law goes. His experience also includes advising on a cross-border private bond placement valued at 20 000 000USD, conducting a legal review of about 3000 legal matters in the context of an Eskom audit undertaken by SNG Grant Thornton, and providing advisory services on multiple mergers and acquisitions—most recently the dual acquisition of 40 Jwayelani retail stores and a meat processing plant.
